Proud Bird Dinner & Mayflower Dance 7/27/05

The Fascinating Proud Bird Restaurant!

There are approximately fifteen aircraft on outdoor display, ranging from a First World War-vintage Fokker D.VII and SPAD XIII through World War II veterans such as a Bf-109G, P-47, Spitfire, and Avenger to a few jets, including a MiG15, F-86, F-80, and an A-4 Skyhawk.  While a number of the aircraft are replicas, they are still quite convincing, and they certainly look the part.

proudbird4.jpg One would think it would be impossible to find a suitable space for an elegant restaurant amidst the hustle and bustle of the Los Angeles International Airport and its surrounding freeways and car rental lots, but somehow the Proud Bird pulled it off. Just slightly to the south of LAX's incoming flight patterns sits the restaurant's banquet and main dining rooms. Both are fairly formal, but one finds that lunch hours allow for a dressy-casual atmosphere. Its decor is modeled after the classic American steakhouse: dim lighting, dark mahogany furniture and crisp linen tablecloths; and its menu is just as characteristic. Almost every cut of steak is available, selected chicken and pasta dishes are well represented and there's a surprisingly extensive selection of seafood. The Sunday brunch is a popular favorite, too. If you're lucky enough to dine here on a nice day, opt for the courtyard -- placed just west of the pond and the outdoor airplane museum (the restaurant's gardens serve as a showplace for classic life-sized airplanes), it's easily the restaurant's nicest space. But remember, if you do decide to dine outdoors, expect loud jet engines passing overhead every 10 minutes.
