ANOTHER DANCE TIP: HEAD SPOTS!
Here are four important reasons to use head spot...
1) Greatly improves lead or follow 2) Turns are much better & easier 3) Makes you more popular! Everyone wants to dance with you! 4) Makes you look younger!
Head spots should be used by both partners in all dances except smooth dances when in closed position like Fox Trot, Waltz, Quickstep, Tango. However, when you are in open position or doing an under arm in a smooth dance you should head spot.
Head spot or head spotting or spotting your turn is a technique every ballet or jazz dancer is familiar with. It means... to look in one direction as long as you can while making a turn and before you finish the turn, turn your head quickly in the same direction.
Example... For a lady's underarm turn in Fox Trot, Waltz, Rumba, etc, As the lady turns to her right under her right arm and his left arm, she should turn her head to the left to keep looking at her partner until almost half way around. Then she should turn her head to the right faster then the body to look back at her partner while her body is still only a little over half way around. She keeps looking at him until her body has completed a full turn with both the head and body facing the partner. You can practice head spot by looking in a mirror while you turn and keeping your eyes on yourself as long as possible.
Remember, lead and follow uses two senses... the sense of touch and the sense of sight. The lady will definitely follow better if she keeps her eyes on her partner. On a cross over break in cha cha, many international lady dancers are trained to spot the man in the middle and then look away on the break. It looks effective and stylish but can also cause her to miss a lead because she is not watching him.
Also, did you ever dance with someone who is looking all over or at someone else but never at you! But if a lady uses head spot and is always looking at him, he will think "Gee, she can't keep her eyes off me!" He'll want to dance with her more!
Did you ever see someone quite elderly?
Sometimes they keep their head from turning and look stiff. Learning to head
spot and learning to turn the head actually makes a person look more flexible and not
rigid! It actually makes you look younger!
